01 · Coffee in the coffee region

From bean to cup

Filandia is ringed by farms. A morning among the coffee trees to understand everything that happens before the cup you’re handed in the courtyard.

Coffee country, from one of Bidea’s windows.

Filandia sits on a hilltop surrounded by coffee and plantain farms: the Coffee Cultural Landscape begins where the streets end. In its Hostelworld description the house offers tours to those plantations; tell them what you’re after and they’ll help you find the right plan.

A farm visit usually walks through the whole cycle: the plant and its shade, hand-picking the ripe cherries, pulping, fermenting and drying, and finally the roast and the cup. The best part is hearing it from someone who does it every day.

What to expect

  • Walking among coffee trees on steep slopes, sometimes in mud.
  • Seeing cherries picked, pulped, washed and dried.
  • A tasting at the end: how roast and brewing change the flavour.
  • Mountains, bamboo groves and plantains everywhere.

What to bring

  • Closed shoes you don’t mind getting muddy.
  • A light rain jacket: the rain here doesn’t ask first.
  • Sunscreen and a cap.
  • Cash, in case you want to take coffee home.

Good to know

  • The coffee region has a main harvest and a smaller one, the traviesa: what you see on the farm depends on the season.

Hi Bidea! I’d like to know more about a coffee farm visit: options, times and prices. Thank you!
