02 · Barbas-Bremen: howler monkeys and Andean forest
Following the sounds of the forest
North and east of town begins a protected Andean forest where, with luck and silence, you hear the howler monkeys long before you see them.
The Barbas-Bremen Regional Natural Park protects humid Andean forest around the Río Barbas canyon. It’s home to howler monkeys, sloths, agoutis and a huge variety of birds, including the Cauca guan, found only in Colombia.
You explore it on foot with a local guide: trails aren’t always marked and a good guide knows where to listen. The monkeys keep no schedule, so nobody can promise them; the forest, on the other hand, is always there.
What to expect
- A walk on forest trails, with climbs and mud.
- Listening before seeing: howlers carry for a long way.
- Birds everywhere; bring binoculars if you have them.
What to bring
- Boots or shoes with good grip.
- A rain jacket and an extra layer.
- Water and a snack.
- Muted-coloured clothes.
Good to know
- Go with a local guide; Bidea can point you to one.
- The Río Barbas can rise suddenly: when it rains, don’t cross the canyon.
- Keep quiet and keep your distance: never feed the animals.
- No tour can guarantee a monkey sighting.
